As a responsible member of the community and an employer, RST contributes to the well being of the residents not only by ensuring they receive a steady supply of electricity and by taking care of its employees, but also by actively educating the public on electrical energy safety issues and prudent use, as well as by initiating various environmental and community projects.
Even though electricity is an inseparable part of our daily lives and the fundamental means for a civilization to evolve, very few know about the opportunities it provides and its dangers. This is why one of the important missions we have set for ourselves is to educate the public and provide it with well-rounded information about electrical energy.
The project for schoolchildren, ElektroMagija (eng. ElectroMagic) is an example of one of the many educational initiatives we are implementing. Its aims is to teach pupils about how to use electricity and appliances safely through games, experiments and other engaging means. Fun virtual heroes tell of the subtleties, uses and threats of electricity on the RST website (www.elektromagija.lt), and there are electronic games to play in order to find out about the dangers of electricity, as well as how to conserve it.
In addition to electronic educational entertainment, this project also includes special ElectroMagija lessons, at which time schools become unique electrical laboratories. Here the pupils can watch a live chain of electricity catch a plasma wave, a luminescent cucumber and many other electrical miracles. They also learn to give first aid to someone who has received an electrical shock. Such lessons are the prize given to classes participating in the ElectroMagija contest, during which pupils have the opportunity to check their knowledge on electrical energy by taking special tests.
We have no doubt that learning through direct experience is the most effective means of helping children to avoid disaster. In 2008, three 10-14-year-old children were victims of an accident when they were carelessly playing near electrical equipment in RST territory.
Another important public responsibility policy we adhere to is environmental preservation. By implementing these projects we aim to decresease the negative effects on the population and the environment by energy sources, as well as to promote increased involvement by the community in initiatives. One such project is the preservation of stork‘s nests. Together with the Ecology Institute of the Vilnius University we build or relocate approximately 500 stork‘s nests per year from the company‘s managed power lines. By relocating stork‘s nests we secure electrical lines and ensure the safe and reliable supply of electrical energy to our customers. Storks are also protected from injury upon returning to their nests.
In day to day operations we actively seek measures to decrease the influence of energy sources on people and the environment. With this in mind, we invest in modern technologies which are environmentally friendly. For instance, in 2006 our company reconstructed the Film Studios substation, which now contains the first most silent transformer in Lithuania. In working with electrical equipment, we uphold both Lithuanian and international legislation and agreements.
